In January of year 2000, Karel Tresnak of Outrigger Connection decided to design a new hull that followed the concept of America's Cup racing yachts. The hull's rocker is different from anything else out there, it follows a smooth curve on the bow of the boat and the line straightens out towards the stern almost to the straight line. This concept allows the boat to stay horizontal in most ocean conditions and the surfing is made easily forward instead of sliding down on the wave.

The MIRAGE also performs excellently in flat conditions. Several tests were done and Mirage always came in ahead of the leading brands of OC6 canoes, up to 2 seconds faster doing turns.

Two prototypes entered the Molokai Hoe in 2000 and the results were fantastic. The MIRAGE finished 1st and 2nd out of 100 canoes and a new course record was established. The popularity of the MIRAGE was proven in the 2001 regatta season in the Hui Waa division and during Waikiki McFarlane's surfing regatta where all of the clubs entered the race using a MIRAGE.

The MIRAGE is a legend already. Winner of the last 3 Molokai Hoe races and record holder from the 2000 race, the MIRAGE became the canoe of choice for the world's best outrigger teams. The Molokai Hoe race in 2002 just verified the trend with the first 13 crews to finish paddling a MIRAGE.

The first race for the Mirage in Australia was the 2003 Coca-Cola Hamilton Island Cup. There were 8 Mirages entered in a fleet of 96 canoes and Mirage canoes filled the first 4 places.

The rest is history, the Mirage is now paddled in more countries around the world than any other canoe. In 2004 it was the canoe chosen to be used at the World Sprint Titles in Hawaii.

As well as it's hull design a unique innovation of the MIRAGE is its integrated canvas track in the canoe’s gunnel, eliminating any fasteners and possibility of injuries during water changes.

The canoes are constructed from the finest composite materials, like Kevlar, graphite and S glass, using the various core materials to obtain the desired physical properties of the hull and deck of the canoes. The technologies used to fabricate the canoes are the latest methods from aerospace industries like vacuum bagged construction resulting in optimum weight to strength ratio between the epoxy resin and the fibres.
